Canelo Alvarez-Daniel Jacobs fight moving ahead after Canelo-GGG talks crumble

Daniel Jacobs and his promoter, Matchroom Boxing, are ready to step in now that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez likely won't be fighting Gennady Golovkin in the near future.

Daniel Jacobs and his promoter, Matchroom Boxing, are ready to step in now that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez likely won't be fighting Gennady Golovkin in the near future.

Daniel Jacobs is getting a shot at Saul "Canelo" Alvarez after negotiations for a rematch between Alvarez and unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin collapsed Tuesday, ESPN.com reports.

Jacobs' promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, received a proposal from Alvarez's promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, for an HBO pay-per-view main-event bout Sept. 15 in Las Vegas.

Hearn is eager to make the fight happen.

"I can tell you that we love the fight," Hearn told ESPN.com from England. "It's a fight that when I signed Daniel Jacobs he told me he believes he beats Canelo every day of the week."

Hearn and De La Hoya both told ESPN.com they want to complete an agreement quickly.

Jacobs (34-2, 29 KOs) lost his WBA belt to Golovkin in a controversial decision in March 2017, but he impressed with his ability to go the distance and recover from a fourth-round knockdown.

Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) and Golovkin then fought to a controversial draw last September. Their planned May 5 rematch stalled over Alvarez testing positive twice for performance-enhancing drugs (and then being suspended for six months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission). Golovkin knocked out fill-in opponent Vanes Martirosyan in two rounds.

The bout is now off after Golovkin reportedly insisted on a 50-50 split of the purse after an initial agreement gave Alvarez 65 percent.

"If GGG ever comes to his senses we can fight next year if he wants for Cinco de Mayo," De La Hoya told ESPN.com. "I tell you one thing: The money he would make for Canelo he now has to fight five or six opponents to make that kind of money. We've moved on."

Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler, told USAToday.com late Tuesday that a fight could still be made as he continues to speak with Golden Boy president Eric Gomez.

"It doesn't seem to be too complicated, it is still the biggest fight out there for both guys," Loeffler told USAToday.com.

Hearn told ESPN.com that conversations between Matchroom and Golden Boy began last week when the Canelo-GGG negotiations started to sour. Hearn said he wasn't sure at first whether Golden Boy's interest in Jacobs was real or if his fighter was being used as leverage.

"We have a guy in Daniel Jacobs who, in my opinion, beat Gennady Golovkin but in anybody's opinion had a wonderful fight with Golovkin which many couldn't split. In that respect, I see Jacobs as the perfect guy to fight Canelo," Hearn told ESPN.com.

De La Hoya also talked up Jacobs.

"I can't say he won't be Canelo's toughest fight. He might be tougher than GGG," De La Hoya told ESPN.com.
