Manchester United officially announced on Tuesday the signing of Brazilian midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk for £52 million (€60 million).

The 25-year-old player becomes José Mourinho's first addition for the upcoming season, while the club announced on its website that the details of the agreement will be revealed "later".

The Brazilian footballer, who will participate in the 2018 World Cup with his national team, has become the fifth most expensive signing in the history of the 'Red Devils', behind Paul Pogba (£105 million), Romelu Lukaku (£75 million), Ángel di María (£75 million), and Anthony Martial (£60 million).

Born in Belo Horizonte (Brazil), Fred left Internacional in 2013 to try his luck in Europe, where he joined Shakhtar Donetsk, winning three Ukrainian leagues, four Ukrainian Cups, and four Super Cups.

This season, he played 37 matches with Shakhtar and scored four goals that helped his team win the league.

In addition, he helped his team reach the Champions League round of 16, where they lost to Roma, with victories in the group stage against Manchester City and Napoli.

In 2015, the player tested positive for doping in the first test he took for Brazil in an official competition, the 2015 Copa America in Chile.

Fred had to serve a one-year suspension before continuing his career in Ukraine. EFE
