The German goalkeeper of Liverpool, Loris Karius, suffered a concussion during the Champions League final that pitted the English team against Real Madrid, according to doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital who treated the goalkeeper five days after the match.
"After carefully reviewing the match footage and integrating a detailed history, including his current subjective symptoms and symptoms after contact, as well as physical exams and objective measurements, we conclude that Mr. Karius suffered a concussion during the match on May 26, 2018," the statement from doctors Ross Zafonte and Lenore Herget said.
Karius failed to stop the first goal by Real Madrid, scored by Frenchman Karim Benzema, as well as the third goal by the Madrid team, scored by Wales' Gareth Bale, who sealed the 3-1 victory with a powerful long shot that the Liverpool goalkeeper failed to catch.
"At the time of our evaluation, the main residual symptoms and objective signs of Mr. Karius suggest that he suffered a visual-spatial dysfunction that probably occurred immediately after the event - which caused the concussion. Such deficits may affect performance," the doctors added, not specifying when Karius suffered the concussion.
As the doctors Zafonte and Herget emphasized in their statement, the German goalkeeper is recovering favorably from the symptoms.
