PREVIEW:
Rafael Nadal is determined to regain the top spot in the world rankings as soon as possible. To do this, he must win the title of the Rome Masters 1000, where he will face Italian Fabio Fognini on Friday (5:00 am, Peruvian time, via ESPN) for a spot in the semifinals.
Extremely solid, Rafael Nadal defeated 19-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 in Rome.
Shapovalov showed greater resistance in the first set, saving eight break points in his first two service games and putting up a real opposition against the legend. But in the second set, he ran out of arguments against the experience of Rafael Nadal.
"I played a solid match, missed some chances on return, but the game changed when I got the break. I stayed pretty calm with my serve and made fewer errors on return. Overall, I can't complain," said Rafael Nadal.
Fabio Fognini, on the other hand, reached the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 in Rome after defeating the German Peter Gojowczyk with a double 6-4.
