The most bitter day for Hamburger's fans
The historic club will leave the Bundesliga for the first time in its history after losing its category on the last matchday. Their victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach was not enough to reach Wolfsburg and they will leave the top division of football after 55 years.
A club that once was European champion (1983) and six-time German champion. A club that also welcomed world football figures such as Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rafael van der Vaart, Ivica Olić, Zé Roberto, and even Paolo Guerrero.
But also historic figures such as Franz Beckenbauer, Felix Magath, and Uwe Seeler. The latter holds the title of Hamburger's top scorer with 214 goals. Defender Manfred Kaltz is the player with the most appearances, a total of 679 matches.
Aside from some acts of violence, most fans supported the players with applause in their last match in the Bundesliga. Now the German club will have to work very hard to face the second division next season.
