LIMA.- With their goals accomplished, the Cuban wrestlers concluded their excellent performance here at the Pan American Championship, in which the six freestyle wrestlers won medals, including three gold medals by Reineri Andreu, Liván López, and Reineris Salas.

First the six Greco-Roman wrestlers, then four from the women's team, and in the end, five freestyle gladiators won their tickets to the Lima 2019 Pan American Games in this event that awarded three spots per division.

The freestyle wrestlers had the opportunity to secure all the tickets for Lima 2019, however, an injury to the right elbow prevented the bronze medalist Alejandro Valdés from competing in an extra match against the other winner of that medal, the Dominican Albaro Rudesindo.

The coaching staff preserved Valdés, who was the only one unable to advance to the gold medal rounds, as he was defeated in the semifinals 9-10 by the northerner Logan Stieber. The Caribbean wrestler took a 7-0 lead, but in the last minute his opponent overcame him. Valdés couldn't finish the fight due to the mentioned injury.

Nevertheless, he was determined to seek the bronze, which he achieved with a 10-0 advantage over the Canadian Michael Asselstine, with 2:43 minutes remaining in the match.

Reineri Andreu, in the 57 kg category, won Cuba's first gold medal by defeating the Colombian Oscar Tigreros 10-0. Earlier, in the semifinals, the Caribbean wrestler defeated the American Thomas Gilman, silver medalist at last year's World Championship in Paris, with a score of 7-4.

In a contentious final against the United States tied 2-2, López followed, winning with a clear superiority of 6-1 against Nazar Kulchytsky in the 74 kg category at the Videna High Performance Center's Polideportivo 1.

Salas won his fifth title at this level with a 9-2 victory over the American Kyven Gadson in the 97 kg category, confirming his performance in the second half with a 5-1 record.

In other title matches, Yurieski Torreblanca lost a close match to David Taylor in the 86 kg category, with a score of 2-3, and Yudenny Alpajón lost 0-9 to Nicholas Gwiazdowski, both opponents from the United States, to equalize the finals.
