The aircraft accident in which the majority of the members of the Brazilian football team Chapecoense died in 2016 was caused by a lack of fuel.

The head of the Colombian Civil Aeronautics accident investigation group, Miguel Camacho, stated that "it could be said that the accident occurred due to fuel exhaustion of the plane."

According to the gathered information, the crew refueled with just over 9,000 liters of fuel, which was 2,600 liters less than the minimum amount required to travel the distance between Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia and Medellin in Colombia.

Miguel Camacho reiterates that for this flight an international flight was not planned, therefore it would be considered as negligence.

The plane with 77 occupants crashed in Cerro El Gordo, just before landing at Rionegro International Airport, where 71 people died.
