Atlas defeated Chivas by the minimum difference and gave this victory to their captain, Rafa Márquez, who played his last match in the Jalisco Stadium. The 39-year-old defender said goodbye to his fans in the venue where he made his debut in October 1996.
Rafa Márquez announced his retirement at the end of the current Mexican tournament, but he still hopes to be called up for the Mexican national team to play in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he hopes to bid a definitive farewell.
The fans of Atlas unfurled a flag with his image and all his teammates entered the field wearing his jersey.
Rafa Márquez was substituted in the 92nd minute of the match and left amid a standing ovation from the entire stadium. The fans chanted "Olé, olé, olé, Márquez, Márquez!".
The defender still has one more match to play, which will be on Saturday, April 28th against Pachuca, for the last round of the Clausura 2018.
Rafa Márquez will take on a position as an executive at Atlas, but first he hopes to be called up for the World Cup in Russia 2018.
