That year, Senna won behind the wheel of a Lotus 99T, surpassing Nelson Piquet and Michele Alboreto, who completed the podium. Despite being in a lower-level team, Senna fought for the championship and finished second, only behind Piquet, who outscored him by 16 points.

A year later, Senna moved to McLaren, where he had his best period, confirming his level as one of the greatest drivers in history and becoming the protagonist of the most important rivalry in Formula 1 with Frenchman Alain Prost.
