Violence wave in Ciudad Universitaria propels the recovery of sports spaces

The wave of violence that erupted with a confrontation between alleged drug dealers in the open frontons of Ciudad Universitaria on February 23, has mobilized the authorities of the highest study house in Mexico, with the recovery of these sports spaces.

UNAM combats drugs with sports

That is why the National Autonomous University of Mexico has focused on combating drugs with sports. That is why on March 8 and 9, CU will host the National Frontball Championship, which will take place in these sports spaces that were previously taken by people outside the institution for the distribution of prohibited substances.

"The space we are in is being used for what it was intended for," explained Alejandro Fernández Varela Jiménez, General Director of University Sports at UNAM. "In fact, in another space, some students are playing right now."

Security measures

Among the security measures are the increased presence of security guards, as well as an exclusive access booth for the university community and external people who will use the complex properly. All of them will have to identify themselves at the entrance.

UNAM to participate in the championship

In this championship, the University will participate with students from the Faculty of Law, FES Zaragoza, and the Faculty of Engineering, where Ana Laura Consuelo Martínez and José Maximiliano Jiménez Mendoza, two pelotaris, will compete.

"As a team, we have training and we individually hope to have good results in this championship," expressed Jiménez Mendoza to the media.

"This championship is very important for us to be able to recover the sports spaces, and we hope to do a very good job. We are very clear about that and we are grateful for the opportunity," added Ana Laura.

National championship as a qualifier for the World Cup

Last year's tournament, held in Tepito, Mexico, won a silver and a bronze medal. This year, the national championship will serve as a qualifier for the specialty's World Cup in Paris.
