Venezuelan Boxer Yeison Cohen Operated on After Suffering Brain Hemorrhage
Venezuelan boxer Yeison Cohen, who was knocked out during a boxing event in the Colombian city of Barranquilla, underwent emergency surgery this morning in a clinic after suffering a brain hemorrhage as a result of the fight.
Cohen, who faced Colombian boxer Hugo Berrio on Friday night in an eight-round fight, was part of the boxing card held at Hotel El Prado, which featured four other bouts.
In a statement to the media, John Barrera, the doctor who provided first aid to Cohen in the ring, stated that the trainer told the boxer "not to go out for the eighth round and at that moment he collapsed and started convulsing."
On the canvas, the Venezuelan received first aid with cardiopulmonary resuscitation before being transported by ambulance to the medical center.
Clinica General del Norte, where Cohen is being treated, reported that he is in the Intensive Care Unit after undergoing surgery for a brain hematoma.
"His condition is critical. A hematoma was found in the tomography. He was operated on and is not conscious. His evolution will be assessed in the next few hours," said Danilo Melendez, the doctor from the healthcare institution.
