Roger Federer wins fifth Laureus Sportsman of the Year award
Swiss tennis player Roger Federer, currently ranked number one in the ATP, won his fifth Laureus Sportsman of the Year award. This comes after surpassing Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal and Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, his two main contenders in the race.
Also nominated for this award were three British athletes: racing driver Lewis Hamilton, cyclist Chris Froome, and athlete Mo Farah. However, winning two Grand Slam titles (Australian Open and Wimbledon) helped Federer once again claim the trophy.
But that wasn't the only recognition Roger Federer received in Monte Carlo, as he also won the Comeback of the Year award. This was after a season in which he overcame injuries and returned to the top of the ATP rankings.
Thus, Roger Federer added his sixth Laureus award, a record in the history of these awards, which were first presented in 2000. The winner in the Best Sportswoman category was Serena Williams, and the best team was the Mercedes Formula 1 team.
