Arsene Wenger, French coach of Arsenal, expressed his dissatisfaction on Friday with the economic power of the big teams in European football, which is "destroying the competition".
"When you look at the top five teams in Europe, in December we already know four champions. This means that something is not right in this sport. The financial power of some teams is basically destroying the competition," said the Frenchman.
In England, Manchester City has a 15-point lead over their neighbors Manchester United; in Germany, Bayern Munich dominates the Bundesliga with a 16-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen; in Spain, Barcelona is 9 points ahead of Atletico Madrid (and 19 points ahead of Real Madrid); and in France, Paris Saint Germain has an 11-point lead over Olympique Lyon.
Only Italy, among the major European leagues, is experiencing an intense title race, with Napoli and Juventus in first and second position, respectively, separated by one point.
In terms of money, Premier League clubs have spent more than ever in January: 450 million pounds (515 million euros), double the amount spent in the same month in 2011, which was the transfer window with the highest amount of pounds circulating, a staggering 225 million.
"The possibility of unpredictable events has been reduced," concluded Wenger, who in this winter transfer window has acquired the African forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for over 60 million euros. EFE
