The Mexican writer Jorge Volpi was named winner of the twenty-first edition of the Alfaguara Novel Prize 2018 for his publication "A Criminal Novel".
Five years ago, in a forum where the writer was invited, he strongly criticized the nationalism that has been created around soccer in Mexico, stating that there are disciplines in which one can succeed and see it as an achievement for the country.
"Soccer is the only place where people still believe in national identities. Soccer commentators always say 'of course, we lost because we are Mexicans' and no," said the novelist back then.
