The Dakar Rally of 1986, the eighth edition of the race that went from Versailles to Dakar, will go down in the history of our motorsport as the first one to have Peruvian crews among its entrants.
The pairs Henry Bradley – Manolo Mendizábal, Kike Pérez – Nicanor González, and Alfredo Bergna – Coco Corbetto participated in the race thanks to the invitation from Mitsubishi, who provided them with three specially prepared Monteros from Belgium.
After obtaining sponsorships (around 80,000 dollars per crew), the drivers started the competition, and the big surprise came from the drivers Alfredo Bergna and Coco Cobertto, who ultimately took second place in their marathon car category.
The Dakar of that year had nearly 15,000 kilometers of distance, passing through France, Algeria, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, Guinea, and Senegal, and it will be remembered in history for the death of the race's founder, Thierry Sabine, in a helicopter accident.
