Support in the brigades
Through images disseminated on the internet, it was revealed that different Mexican athletes were part of the brigades in the most affected areas.
Jesús Corona, Gerardo Flores, and Santiago Jiménez, among other football players from Cruz Azul, participated in cleaning debris. Likewise, the members of the American Football team Pumas CU provided help.
Similarly, players from America such as Oribe Peralta and Edson Álvarez, as well as some from other teams in the Liga MX, did the same in different areas of the country's center.
Collection of supplies and donations
Figures such as Jared Borgetti, Cristian Mijares, Javier Aquino, among others, were in different places collecting supplies to donate to the affected people.
On his part, boxer Saúl 'Canelo' Álvarez personally donated one million dollars in kind for the affected people.
The Major League Baseball donated one million dollars to the victims in Mexico and Puerto Rico (who were also victims of natural disasters), while the NFL announced that it joined forces with the Red Cross to help the affected people in the same areas.
Atlético de Madrid also donated 50 thousand dollars for the affected people.
Stadiums as collection centers
The Estadio Azteca, the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, and the Estadio Azul did not suffer major damages due to the earthquake, so they were authorized to operate as collection centers. Players from all disciplines of the respective clubs received the donations.
Similarly, the Estadio Hidalgo in Pachuca, the Nemesio Díez in Toluca, and the Estadio Olímpico in Tigres opened their doors to donors, and members of the first team and the women's team were present.
Donation of box office revenue to the affected people
Various sporting events donated part or all of the box office revenue to the earthquake victims, such as Honduras, which donated part of the ticket sales from the match against the Mexican national team.
Similarly, the Mexican national team donated the revenue from the match against Trinidad and Tobago, played in San Luis Potosí, while Alebrijes from the Liga de Ascenso MX donated the box office revenue from the match against Juárez.
Other matches that participated in this initiative were Villarreal vs Tigres, Toluca vs Pumas, among others.
The Formula E will donate the box office revenue generated at the event in Mexico on March 3, 2018.
Tributes from the sports community for the victims
One of the most emotional tributes was the one carried out by the Mexican national team in the match against Trinidad and Tobago in San Luis Potosí, where a minute of silence was observed before the match and both rescuers and canine units that worked in the rubble were honored.
In the Tigres match, the fans sang the song "Cielito Lindo" at 19:09, in reference to the date of the earthquake.
In Europe, teams like Villarreal illuminated their stadium with green, white, and red colors, while Atlético de Madrid posed in the first eleven photo with a sign that read 'Fuerza México' (Strength Mexico).
On their part, before the match between Real Madrid and Real Betis, where Mexican player Andrés Guardado plays, a minute of silence was observed and the fans raised their scarves in tribute to the earthquake victims.
In the effort to raise funds and as a tribute, the Mexican Baseball League and the Mexican Pacific League joined together in an All-Star Game for Mexico, where the red team wore the number seven referring to the first earthquake that struck Oaxaca and Chiapas, and the green team wore number 19 commemorating the second earthquake that affected Mexico City, Puebla, and Morelos.
One of the most emotional moments was the response of Cristiano Ronaldo to the parents of Santiago, one of the children who lost their lives in the Rébsamen school after the earthquake and who was allegedly a fan of the Portuguese football player. Ronaldo dedicated a jersey to his "number one fan".
Similarly, football players such as Diego Reyes, Héctor Herrera, Miguel Layún, Lionel Messi, Dani Alves, among others, sent messages of support to the survivors of the Rébsamen school after the earthquake that occurred on September 19.
