Harry Kane: The longed-for goal-scorer

Harry Kane: The longed-for goal-scorer

England has not seen a homegrown top scorer in the Premier League since the 1999-2000 season, when Kevin Philips achieved it with Sunderland (30 goals). The country, still under the depression of the disastrous performance in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where they were eliminated in the group stage, believes they have finally found that coveted goal-scoring man in Harry Kane. This powerful 22-year-old forward (Chingford, 28-7-1993) is the new flagbearer for Tottenham and is expected to be the number nine for the Three Lions in Russia 2018, after having rejected Ireland (his father was born on Irish soil, in Galway).

Season of unexpected explosion

Last season was his unexpected explosion as a total forward. After a carousel of loans (Leyton Orient, Milwall, Norwich, and Leicester), Kane sent Soldado to the bench with 31 goals in 51 games for Spurs (21 of those goals were scored in the Premier League, making him the second top scorer after Agüero, who scored 26), and Roy Hodgson called him up for the first time against Lithuania on March 27th. He came on for Rooney and only needed one minute and twenty seconds to score his first goal as an international...

Praise and awards

He received praise and awards. He was named the Best Young Player of the 2014-15 Premier League season and made the ideal eleven. Much had to do with his brace against Chelsea (5-3), including a sensational goal after surpassing Cesc and Óscar. He also reignited the traditional rivalry in North London between Tottenham and Arsenal fans. As a child, he was a Gunners fan, but he was signed by Tottenham at the age of 8, only to be sent home after a year. Despite the setback, he was recruited by Spurs and made Arsenal pay on February 7th. He scored a decisive brace against Arsenal (2-1) at White Hart Lane, with his brother Charlie being hoisted by the Spurs crowd in a pub where they were watching the match, shouting "He's one of ours!". Needless to say, he didn't have to pay for a single drink.
