XFL Strawweight Championship: Montserrat Ruiz 'Conejo' becomes first champion

Montserrat Ruiz 'Conejo' became the first XFL strawweight champion in the season finale of the promotion.

The Bonebreakers fighter emerged victorious by unanimous decision against Saraí Sáenz after a tough five-round battle at Arena Mexico.

The venue in the Doctores neighborhood welcomed the mixed martial arts company for the first time, and the main event lived up to the fans' expectations. 'Conejo', who resides in Los Angeles, California, where she complements her training at Kings MMA gym and the 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu academy, entered the fight as the favorite, but maintaining her undefeated streak was not easy.

Sáenz took advantage of her reach advantage and kept her distance to punish the guanajuatense fighter with right crosses, causing her to bleed from the nose early on due to 'Cenicienta's strikes. While on their feet, Saraí had the upper hand, but she fell victim to takedowns and spent most of the fight trying to get off the cage.

The control on the ground and the takedowns ultimately tilted the scorecards in favor of Ruiz, who thanked her opponent for the great fight they put on.

The XFL night also set up the two contenders for the men's flyweight title, which will be contested in 2018. Alan Diosdado advanced to the final by defeating Canek Granados by decision, while Brazilian fighter Alessandro Costa 'Nono' submitted Daniel Saucedo 'Kiber' in the first round. They had their first face-off after their respective fights.
