Diego López Wins Gold in World Para Swimming Championship

The Mexican athlete Diego López claimed the title of the World Para Swimming Championship in the men's 50m backstroke S3 category, where he also achieved his personal best.

López, who started in lane three of the Francisco Márquez Sports Complex pool, lived up to the expectations of the competition by clocking in at 46.38 seconds, making history in the world of adaptive sports.

The silver medal went to Italy's Vincenzo Boni with a time of 47.86 seconds, while Chinese swimmer Wenpan Huang took the bronze with a time of 48.88 seconds.

"I feel happy. I didn't think I could do it because it's a fast event, but I'm pleased with this result that puts me among the best," said López.

López, who was eliminated from this event at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, had the opportunity to recover and achieve success on a global stage.

"This medal means a lot to me, considering everything I've been through and especially after what happened in Mexico with the earthquake," added the double medalist from the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games.
