Francisco Ibarra, former President of the FMF, told As Mexico that the Argentine coach, Marcelo Bielsa, is the right candidate to lead the Mexican National Team, after the departure of Miguel Herrera.
Facing the range of possibilities that are being considered to take over the helm of the Tri, the former executive mentioned that Decio de María should bet on a coach who studies Mexican soccer, with a view to the qualifiers for Russia 2018.
"Bielsa has the perfect profile, he is a studious and capable coach, very observant of the players' conditions and now it will be the beginning of a new era and a new process towards the qualifiers, and what better time to think about a coach with that ability," said Ibarra, who added.
"We must aim for a coach who has the profile of a national team manager, it is not the same to lead a club as to lead a national team. We must look for a coach who knows how to lead and guide young Mexicans well, that is what we have been lacking, the last one who did it well was Ricardo La Volpe, it was a good exercise but it was interrupted and only some know why they did it."
It was César Luis Menotti who recommended Francisco Ibarra, then football director of Atlas, to hire Marcelo Bielsa, the coach who had made Newell's Old Boys champions with an innovative project that gave priority to the youth teams. "He is the ideal," said Menotti, "although the truth is that he is a bit crazy."
"At that time, I had to resort to a foreigner because it was the best option and it was the way I worked, in Menotti's case, I looked for him because he had already worked with a national team and was a winner," he concluded.
