Gabby Douglas, three-time gold medal-winning American gymnast, has revealed that she suffered "abuse" by a former United States gymnastics team doctor.

Douglas became the third member of the "Fierce Five" women's gymnastics team to speak out about being a victim of abuse.

The athlete made the accusations on Tuesday while apologizing for a comment she made last week regarding her former teammate Aly Raisman's stance on sexual assault victims.

Douglas stated, "No matter what you wear, it never gives anyone the right to harass or abuse you. It would be like saying that because of the leotards we wore, it was our fault that Larry Nassar abused us."

The athlete faced criticism on social media after suggesting that women should not dress "provocatively/sexually" in response to Raisman's claims that Nassar sexually abused her.

In the same statement she released on her Instagram page, Douglas revealed, "I didn't publicly share my experiences because for years we were conditioned to stay silent and honestly, some things were extremely painful."

She added, "I wholeheartedly support my teammates in coming forward with what happened to them."

Raisman, the captain of the gold medal-winning team at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, stated in an interview with "60 Minutes" earlier this month that she was among the young girls sexually assaulted by Nassar.

She said, "When I was 15 years old, Nassar abused me for the first time."

Nassar had worked with athletes in USA Gymnastics for over two decades before being fired in 2015.

Previously, McKayla Maroney, winner of two medals at the 2012 Games, revealed last month that Nassar had abused her for years.

The 54-year-old Nassar pleaded guilty to multiple counts of sexual assault and faces at least 25 years in prison.

The doctor is accused of molesting seven girls on the gymnastics team.

He also awaits sentencing on charges of child pornography and is facing lawsuits from more than 125 women and girls.
