After 36 years, Peru returns to a World Cup
The man behind this triumph is Argentine Ricardo 'El Tigre' Gareca, who with his leadership managed to bring out the best in each of our selected players.
Omar Ruíz de Somocurcio spoke this morning with 'El Flaco' and told us details of what is coming for the Peruvian team and what it was like to bring the 'Bicolor' back to the big leagues.
Next, we will see the first part of the interview where the Argentine strategist confesses some details about the qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the follow-up he has been doing on some players from the local and foreign leagues.
A very tough start
"We have gone through tough stages. But, I believe that in those moments the most important thing was that we were convinced that we could reverse everything, that we had the arguments and players to improve and that led us to the situation we are in today."
The formula for success
"Since we took charge of the national team, I always said that we believed in the Peruvian player, in their quality, in their abilities because that is essential, because only God performs miracles. The conviction was that Peru has the necessary players for any challenge."
The embrace with Cueva at the end of the match
"One feels more comfortable in a certain environment, or maybe there is a coach that suits them better. So, a chemistry or something that is reinforced can be achieved and that can favor a player. Christian Cueva never had any problems with us, he is a guy who has grown a lot and it is all thanks to him."
The surprising call-up of Adrián Zela
"We have been following Zela for a while. There are many players we have been following for some time who, for some reason, are not in the squad but have been followed for many years."
