Peru draws with New Zealand in World Cup Qualifier
Peru is still alive. They drew 0-0 against New Zealand during their visit to Wellington. However, for many, it is a result that feels disappointing, considering that Peru was clearly superior for much of the match.
Jefferson Farfán and Aldo Corzo had the clearest opportunities to score. The former was denied a goal right on the goal line, while the latter had a perfect header stopped.
The game plan was no surprise from the start: New Zealand focused on defending while Peru controlled the majority of the match, but lacked intensity in the final 20 meters of the field.
Everything will now be decided in Lima next Wednesday. Ricardo Gareca's team will need to overcome the pressure of being favorites and playing at home in order to achieve the dream of returning to the World Cup after more than 30 years.
