Everything you need to know about the two matches between Peru and New Zealand for the qualification to the 2018 Russia World Cup.

Peru and New Zealand will face each other this week and next week for the qualification for the 2018 Russia World Cup. The playoff will start in Wellington and end in Lima.

About these matches there are some doubts regarding the rules. Here we explain everything.

Does the away goal count?

Yes, as long as the overall score is tied. For example, if Peru and New Zealand draw 2-2 in Wellington and then 0-0 in Lima, Peru will qualify for scoring more away goals than New Zealand.

What happens if they draw in the overall score?

If the match in Lima ends in a tie, even on away goals, two 15-minute extra times will be played, as FIFA mandates. If no advantages are gained in these two extra times, the qualification will be decided by penalties.

What happens with yellow cards?

FIFA stated that for this playoff, all the cards received by the players in the Russia 2018 Qualifiers have been canceled. Therefore, there are no players on the edge of suspension.

Can a player miss a World Cup match due to a red card in the playoff?

Since it is an official competition, yes. If a player is sent off in the second leg of the playoff and then reaches the World Cup, they will serve their suspension date in the World Cup. Yellow cards do not accumulate. However, FIFA, if desired, could cancel both yellow and red cards, as they did for the playoff.
