West Ham fires coach Slaven Bilic

West Ham announced on Monday the dismissal of Croatian coach Slaven Bilic after a series of poor results that have led the London club to the relegation zone of the Premier League (18th).

"West Ham can confirm that Slaven Bilic will leave his position at the club today," said the Hammers in a statement.

"A change is now necessary in order for the club to react and perform in line with its ambitions," they added.

Thank you very much to Slaven for his time at the club. #VamosHammers-

The Croatian coach took over the team in 2015 with a three-year contract. The 4-1 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday was his last match.

Among the candidates to replace him is former Manchester United coach David Moyes.

"The search for a new coach to move West Ham forward is underway and an announcement will be made in the coming days," West Ham said. Bilic's four assistants were also dismissed.

Bilic, a former Croatian international who reached the semifinals of the 1998 World Cup, shone in his first season, finishing seventh. In the second season, the team finished 11th.

Prior to his time at West Ham, Bilic had managed Hadjuk Split, the Croatian U21 and senior national teams, Lokomotiv Moscow, and Besiktas.

When asked about his future after the defeat to Liverpool on Saturday, Bilic said, "It's hard for me to talk about that now. Of course, I believe in myself, I don't feel like a broken man, I am strong, I know my worth."
