The Tijuana team clings to the dream of qualifying for the playoffs of the Apertura 2017 Tournament of the MX League, after beating León 2-1 in matchday 16.
The synthetic field of the Caliente stadium witnessed the reaction of the local team, which came from behind after a goal by Chilean Juan Cornejo in the 17th minute, with the goals from Argentinians Ignacio Malcorra (from a penalty kick in the 72nd minute) and Juan Lucero (79th minute).
With this result, Xolos reached 21 points, still outside the playoff spots, but with the mathematical hope of achieving the goal in the next and final match of the regular phase.
On the other hand, León remained stuck with 26 points in playoff positions, but without excessive confidence as it could still be eliminated at any time.
The team from Guanajuato took the lead thanks to a nice combination that Cornejo finished for the 1-0 away goal, which remained until halftime thanks to the performance of their American goalkeeper William Yarbrough.
Tijuana had been better but failed to convert their chances, and a penalty by Cornejo on Gustavo Bou led to the local team's comeback. The penalty was taken by Ignacio Malcorra for the 1-1.
The perseverance of the border team continued and it was rewarded by Juan Lucero, who came on as one of the local team's substitutions for the second half. Bou missed a penalty, which could have secured a more comfortable victory for the home team.
Therefore, Xolos will have to wait for a combination of results and a victory in the next match to dream of the playoffs.
