Spurs and Cavaliers, the teams that have spent the most in the market.

Spurs and Cavaliers, the ones who have spent the most in the summer market.

Spurs and Cavaliers, the ones who have spent the most in the summer market.

Which teams have won the most and which have been more conservative in this crazy NBA summer?

Sports Illustrated asks this question in the midst of a paradigm shift: the geometric rise of the salary cap (11% up to 70 million this year, more to come) thanks to the new TV contracts has skyrocketed the investment in rosters. The max contracts are even more massive and the intermediate ones are reaching figures that were simply prohibitive just a year ago.

It may come as a surprise that, for once, it is the San Antonio Spurs the team that has invested the most money in new contracts signed this summer through free agency (excluding trades). With many pending issues and a deep rotation overhaul, the Texans have gone above ($242.963529) the 240 million dollars. Their biggest expense came with Kawhi Leonard's continuity for 94 million over the next five years. But they have also signed players like LaMarcus Aldridge and David West and have kept Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Danny Green. In exchange, players like Splitter, Joseph, Baynes, Bellinelli... have left.

In second place is Cleveland Cavaliers with over 202 million dollars invested mainly in the 113 million over five years of Kevin Love's new contract. They have also signed players like LeBron James, Mozgov, Mo Williams, Dellavedova, James Jones... and the situation of Tristan Thompson is yet to be resolved. If the power forward finally returns to the Cavs for around 80 million, Ohio will take the first place from the Spurs.

In a list where Lakers or Knicks, who have not been able to make significant moves, are not at the top, the third place goes to the over 130 million of the Memphis Grizzlies, almost all destined to seal Marc Gasol's new contract. The following teams are the Brooklyn Nets, Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks, Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Clippers, and Miami Heat, who close the top ten.

On the other hand, Utah Jazz is the team that has spent the least new money with only 4.3 million contributed to Joe Ingles' new contract. The Mormon team has their core players under contract: Hayward, Favors, Burks, Gobert, Exum, Hood, Burke... Following them is Charlotte Hornets, whose main move has been the mere 4.3 million invested in the two-year contract of Jeremy Lin and whose total remains at 5.3 million. Players like Nico Batum, Jeremy Lamb, and Spencer Hawes were acquired through trades.

The third least spent team (Washington Wizards) is already above 12 million. They are followed by the ascending Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, and Los Angeles Lakers, with 27 million dollars.
