Mexico wins silver medal in women's recurve team event

In the second day of competition at the World Archery Championships, Mexico made history by securing the silver medal in the women's recurve team event. Aida Roman, Mariana Avitia, and Alejandra Valencia were responsible for giving our country its first podium in this discipline and in the competition held on Mexican soil.

"We all had the mindset of knowing where we are and wanting to reach the final because we also knew that we have the ability to achieve it. Chinese Taipei was a very strong team that caught up with us in the next two sets where very high scores were recorded. The fact that three tens were scored in the tiebreaker was very emotional and something that only happened to us once during training," said Roman.

In the first round, which started from the round of 16, the Mexican team eliminated Turkey 5-1, while in the next stage they won 6-0 against Russia. In the semifinals, the Mexican archers faced Chinese Taipei, a game that became difficult when they were leading in the score.

Aida, Mariana, and Alejandra were winning 4-0, but the Asian team reacted and corrected their aim to win the next two sets and tie the game. Thus, the match had to go to a tiebreaker where each archer shot an arrow. The Chinese Taipei athletes scored 7, 8, and 10, while the Mexicans scored three tens to secure the victory.

"We already have a silver medal secured and that's great, now the finals will be held over the weekend where we will strive for the best result. Throughout the competition, we were focused on what we had to do, and closing it with the Chinese Taipei team was very exciting. Before shooting the tiebreaker, we all said to ourselves that we had to enjoy it, and that's what we did and things worked out," said Valencia.

The women's team will aim for the gold medal against Korea next Sunday, a country that eliminated Colombia, Georgia, and China. The Asian team is considered the favorite to win the title. However, the Mexican archers hope that the Zocalo Capitalino will be a factor in their favor.

"We are excited about the result and the final is still to come. Korea is a strong opponent and we have already competed against them in a final in Berlin, where the gold medal was also at stake. We have worked on what we need to do in a final, so I believe we have everything we need and we just have to shoot well. We are in our own country and we will have a lot of support," Avitia mentioned.

On the other hand, the men's recurve team did not meet the expectations set for the event as they lost in the first round to Malaysia with a score of 6-4.
