A goal from Robert Lewandowski
A goal from Robert Lewandowski five minutes from the end restored Poland's advantage over Montenegro (4-2), who in five minutes managed to equalize a two-goal disadvantage and ended up defeated and with no chance of going to Russia, in the midst of a crazy end to the match.
The tranquility with which the match played out in Warsaw for most of the minutes was shaken in the last quarter of an hour. Poland saw their victory at risk against a growing opponent but with minimal chances of being, at best and pending Denmark, second in their group.
Nothing went well for Montenegro. The Danish team didn't fail and they still couldn't turn the game completely against Poland, who only needed a point to finish first and secure their ticket to Russia.
Lewandowski appeared, scoring his sixteenth goal in the ten games he has played in the qualifying phase. He is now one goal ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo as the top scorer on the way to the World Cup. Although Ronaldo still has one more game to play, on Tuesday against Switzerland.
Poland did their homework in the first quarter of an hour, when they took a two-goal lead against an inferior rival. Five minutes later, a run by Lukasz Piszczek on the right brought the ball to Piotr Zielinski, who missed his shot. The ball ended up at the feet of Krzysztof Maczynski, who beat Danijel Petkovic.
Ten minutes later, it was Kamil Grosicki who scored the second goal after taking advantage of a pass from Robert Lewandowski, who received the ball with his back to the goal and saw his teammate making a run.
The match declined afterwards although Montenegro could have reduced the gap in the half hour mark with a shot from Vladimir Jovovic that went high over Wojciech Szczesny's goal.
The story of the match seemed to be written. Poland was looking for more goals. Especially to increase their striker's numbers. Montenegro grew and their reaction blew up the game.
In the 78th minute, a bicycle kick goal from Stefan Mugosa, who had come on as a substitute for Vladimir Jovocic a minute earlier, encouraged Montenegro's hopes, and they equalized shortly after in a play inside the box by Fatos Beciraj that sent the ball to the edge of the penalty area, where Zarko Tomasevic appeared and scored a shot that surpassed Wojciech Szczesny.
The Balkan team went for the win. But defensive mistakes, glaring ones, ended up condemning them. That's when Lewandowski appeared, taking advantage of a bad pass from Nemanja Mijuskovic to his goalkeeper that the Bayern Munich forward intercepted to put Poland ahead again, and they scored the fourth immediately after thanks to an own goal by Filip Stojkovic in an unfortunate action.
