The Wanda Metropolitano, new 68,000-seat stadium of Atlético Madrid, was inaugurated this Saturday in a match where the team defeated Málaga 1-0, with Frenchman Antoine Griezmann being the first goal scorer in the history of the venue, on the fourth matchday of the Spanish league.
With this victory, in a match that was attended by the king of Spain, Felipe VI, a supporter of the capital club, Atlético moved into provisional third position in the league, with eight points, four behind leaders Barcelona, who won on Saturday in Getafe (2-1), and one behind second-placed Real Sociedad, who play against Real Madrid on Sunday.
Griezmann, who will go down in history, scored in the 61st minute from a cross on the right by Argentine Ángel Correa.
After several years of work, the former La Peineta stadium, which was supposed to be the Olympic stadium if Madrid had been awarded the 2016 or 2020 Games, was inaugurated this Saturday, with an investment of 300 million euros by Atlético in the project.
The ball for this inaugural match was brought by three paratroopers from the Spanish Air Force, who jumped to land on the stadium's turf.
