IOC maintains the same number of sports for the 2024 Olympics as in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided today that it will keep the same base of 28 sports for the Paris 2024 Olympics as in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
The proposal, elaborated by the executive committee, was approved by the plenary of the organization during the last day of this week's session in Lima. This means that sports such as golf and rugby 7, which made their debut in Rio 2016, will continue to be part of the program.
Among the 28 proposed sports, the five added for Tokyo 2020 are not included: surfing, climbing, karate, baseball-softball, and skateboarding. However, Paris will also have the possibility to propose, with the agreement of the IOC, five additional sports for its Games later on. In addition, it is still necessary to define which disciplines and events will be integrated into the 28 sports of the Olympics.
Weightlifting was provisionally included in the program, although its federation must demonstrate progress in the fight against doping until December in order to continue in the Games.
The President of the IOC, Thomas Bach, clarified, however, that the possible sanction of weightlifting only applies to Paris 2024. Its presence in Tokyo 2020 is confirmed, although with fewer athletes than in Rio 2016.
The program for Los Angeles 2028, the city that was chosen jointly with Paris 2024 on Wednesday, will only be defined in 2021.
