Ona Carbonell shines in the World Championship debut in Kazan
Under the chords of the well-known "Requiem for a Dream", Ona Carbonell dazzled in her debut at the Kazan World Championship. In the preliminary of the technical solo routine, the Spanish swimmer finished in second place (91.4408) and will fight for an exciting silver medal on Saturday afternoon, a step further in the career of the Olympic medalist after the bronze she won two years ago in Barcelona. She was only surpassed by the Russian Svetlana Romashina (94.3860), the Julia Roberts who performed the main theme of the movie Pretty Woman, and surpassed the Chinese Wenyam Sun (91.3262), news that even exceeded the expectations of the Spanish swimmer.
Ona's two-year commitment to solo
For the past two years, Ona's commitment to the solo routine has made her an almost perfect swimmer. With more strength due to exhaustive physical preparation, and the flexibility and expression that characterize her, the soloist performed a powerful, fast-paced choreography, nailing the five mandatory technical elements with room for improvement in some moves for the final in the afternoon (16:30). She didn't lose the artistic part, always present in her routines.
Designed by Ona herself
With a swimsuit designed by herself, Ona doesn't miss a single detail in the routine where she feels most fulfilled. The technical staff had already warned that they had received very positive feedback from the judges in the last competitions, and it's because Ona, trained by Gemma Mengual and the French Virginie Dedieu, is learning from the best. In this World Championship, the team captain won't be able to aim for seven medals as she will only compete in solo and duet. Ona's commitment can make her move up a level and place herself behind Russia.
