Lewis Hamilton Wins Belgian Grand Prix
English driver Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) won the Belgian Grand Prix, the twelfth of the Formula One World Championship, held at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Hamilton closed the gap to German driver Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari), the championship leader, who finished second on Sunday.
After equaling the German Michael Schumacher's historic record of 68 poles on Saturday, Hamilton celebrated his fifth victory of the year on Sunday and reduced Vettel's lead to seven points. Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) finished third in the race.
Meanwhile, Mexican driver Sergio Pérez finished in 17th place after having to abandon the race on lap 42 when he was asked to return to the pits.
Finnish drivers Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari) and Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) finished fourth and fifth respectively. Spanish driver Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso) earned a point by finishing tenth. His compatriot Fernando Alonso (McLaren-Honda) abandoned the race on lap 26, while Mexican driver Sergio Pérez (Force India) did so with two laps remaining out of the 44 held at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday.
German driver Nico Hülkenberg (Renault) finished sixth, ahead of French driver Romain Grosjean (Haas), at the legendary Ardennes circuit, the longest one in the calendar (7,004 meters). Brazilian driver Felipe Massa (Williams) and French driver Esteban Ocon (Force India) also scored points, finishing eighth and ninth respectively.
The next Grand Prix, the thirteenth out of the twenty in the 2017 World Championship, will be held next weekend at the Monza circuit.
