Bolt came third on Saturday in the final of the 100 meters at the World Athletics Championships, a bitter ending to the glorious farewell the Jamaican had hoped for before retiring.

Justin Gatlin, the Olympic champion in 2004, emerged victorious with a time of 9.92 seconds, the best of the season. His American compatriot Christian Coleman finished second with 9.94, and Bolt completed the podium with 9.95.

For Gatlin, Bolt's biggest rival in recent years, it was revenge for his defeat at the 2015 Beijing World Championships, where he collapsed in the final meters and allowed the Caribbean athlete to surpass him by just one hundredth of a second.

Bolt, who will turn 31 in a couple of weeks, plans to retire after the World Championships in London. He still has one more competition: the 4x100 relay next weekend.
