Ricardo Sanchez, national champion of Wushu (Kung Fu), qualifies for the World Championship in Russia
Ricardo Sanchez, national champion of Wushu (Kung Fu), has qualified for the World Championship in Russia, which will take place from September 27 to October 3 of this year. However, his participation in this competition is in doubt due to a lack of financial support, which forces him to ask for donations.
The Mexican athlete explained to La Aficion that he earned his ticket to Russia through "national competitions, through the selections that are made (district, state, and national)", where "the top positions usually earn a spot in a training camp, where they select only a few to compete. This year there was no training camp, it seems that it is because there was no budget to pay for it, but apparently the parameters for selecting the competitors changed."
This is the second time that Sanchez has been selected to represent Mexico in a World Championship. While they had full support to attend Turkey the first time, this time they need to raise 71,000 pesos in order to cover transportation, assistance, meals, and accommodation in Kazan, Russia.
The six-time national kung fu champion mentioned that there are more teammates in this situation, but due to the large amount of money they need to raise, some of them have decided not to attend the World Championship due to lack of resources.
For Ricardo Sanchez, not having the money has not been an impediment to try to achieve his goal. He launched a campaign on a donations website, seeking to raise enough money to compete next month in Russia.
Despite this, the high-performance athlete not only launched the campaign, but he has also "been seeking support from other sources such as selling commemorative shirts for the World Championship, giving low-cost private lessons, and going to gyms to find sponsorships."
The Norceca champion (North, Central America, and the Caribbean) in 2013 practices two or three times a day, following the advice of his coach and brother, who asks him to prepare so that he arrives at the world competition in good shape.
Ricardo Sanchez is determined to be in Kazan, Russia next September, and he is willing to go into debt to make it happen.
