VIDEO. The Panamanian national team reached the quarterfinals of the fourteenth edition of the Gold Cup on Saturday by defeating Martinique 3-0 at the First Energy Stadium in Cleveland.
Waiting for the outcome of the second match of the day, to be played between the United States (4 points) and Nicaragua (0), Panama, with 7 points, is hoping to determine whether they will advance as the leader or the second in the group.
If they finish first, they will face the third place team from Group A, which is Honduras, or the team from Group C, which will be determined this Sunday.
If they finish second, their opponent will be Costa Rica, who finished first in Group B on Friday.
Martinique, with three points, will have to wait to see what happens in the last match of Group C, where El Salvador also has 3 points and will face Jamaica (4).
The Panamanian national team dominated Martinique on Saturday, as Martinique clearly relied on waiting for the opponent and trying to harm them on the counterattack.
The first of the two matches scheduled at the First Energy Stadium was decided in the 44th minute with a header goal by defender Michael Carrillo.
The 21-year-old player beat his custodians from a corner kick taken by Miguel Camargo.
The score stayed the same in the first half and shortly after the second half began, Gabriel Torres, Panama's best attacker, hit the ball against the left post in the 46th minute.
In the 60th minute, 23-year-old forward Abdiel Arroyo increased the lead with a left-footed shot that defeated goalkeeper Kevin Olimpa.
And seven minutes later, 28-year-old striker Gabriel Torres scored the final goal after a beautiful collective play.
Martinique pushed forward on Panama's goal and it wasn't until the 82nd minute that they created two scoring opportunities with two shots hitting the crossbar.
The first one was by Jean-Emmanuel Nédra, who powerfully shot with his right foot from outside the area after receiving the ball from Yoann Arquin, who had taken the corner kick.
Yann Gregory Thimon got the rebound, and he also shot powerfully with his right foot, and with Panamanian goalkeeper José Calderón without any protection, he watched as the ball hit the post violently again.
