After 116 years, Cienciano celebrates its history
It has been almost 13 years since a Peruvian team made the whole country vibrate with so much emotion. Tears and inconsolable crying were part of a historic celebration. Cienciano won the Recopa Sudamericana and confirmed its previous good performance in the international tournament. Today, Peru's most successful team celebrates its 116 years of institutional life.
Led by Freddy Ternero, Cienciano wrote its name on two cups that seemed unattainable for Peruvian teams. Before that, Sporting Cristal tried it, reaching the final of the Copa Libertadores with Sergio Markarían, who lost to Cruzeiro in the last match of the tournament. But that's it. Then, several years passed to earn respect abroad, where we hardly existed.

With an unbeatable Óscar Ibáñez, an endless Germán Carty, and the leadership of Carlos Lugo, Cienciano defeated anyone who stood in its way. First it was Alianza Lima, then Universidad Católica de Chile, then Santos with Robinho, and so on, it began writing its own history at the international level.
Finally, the people of Cusco celebrated their first international title after defeating River Plate agonizingly. A year later, Ternero's team won on penalties against Boca Juniors and lifted the Recopa Sudamericana.
