Utrecht overturns AZ Alkmaar (3-0) and earns a spot in the Europa League
Utrecht made a comeback against AZ Alkmaar (3-0) and, in the penalty shootout, secured the victory in the final round for a spot in the European competitions of the Dutch League and will play in the upcoming edition of the Europa League.
AZ Alkmaar, who had a comfortable lead in the first leg at AFAS Stadion (3-0), failed to take advantage of that and lost by the same result at Galgenwaard Stadium in Utrecht.
Willem Janssen, in the twelfth minute, Frenchman Sebastien Haller in the 25th minute, and Gyrano Kerk in the 82nd minute equalized the match, which could have been decided before extra time if Haller had not missed a penalty for the home team in added time.
AZ Alkmaar, who played with one less player after Derrick Luckassen was sent off in the 67th minute, failed to score a goal to avoid defeat.
Utrecht won in the penalty shootout and will therefore play in the next edition of the Europa League, along with PSV Eindhoven, third in the Eredivisie standings, and Vitesse, winner of the Dutch Cup.
