The way we understand cars is changing
The industry is transforming and, although it seems like it will take a while, the innovations are already here: hybrids are a reality, we are just a step away from seeing hydrogen fuel cell cars on the market, cars that drive themselves...
New technologies are making a strong impact and it's normal for manufacturers to incorporate them into their work. One of the most recent and still unexplored possibilities is 3D printing, which has already been applied to the automotive industry.
A few months ago, Local Motors introduced the Strati, an electric car printed in 3D, and now they want to take it a step further with a fleet of cars. The project is called Reload Redacted and it has a simple and cost-effective concept that can work.
The model has a common base called Function. It has a chassis that protects the batteries (located between the axles to maintain a low center of gravity), integrated rear seats, Sparco front seats, axles, wheels, and all the mechanical parts.
Afterwards, you can "build" the version you want. At the moment, the manufacturer has shown two, Swim and Sport. Both have their own independent and easily removable body parts in case they receive a blow and need to be replaced. The Swim is a hot rod style variant, with a semi-covered front; while the Sport offers a complete body and a sporty aesthetic reminiscent of a Lotus Evora.
In addition, the brand has already announced that it will be fully customizable, allowing customers to create their preferred combinations, change colors, interchange parts, etc.
