Amsterdam Arena to be renamed Johan Cruyff in memory of Dutch player and coach
The Ajax has announced an agreement of intentions between the stadium management, the club board, the mayor of the city, Eberhard van der Laan, and the council to change the name of the facility inaugurated in 1996.
With the name change, these bodies want to pay tribute to the legendary Dutch former player and coach who would have turned seventy today.
The name change of the stadium is one of the agreed upon agreements. Johan's son, Jordi Cruyff, has stated that the family "feels very happy and honored" with the decision made.
In addition to the name change of the Ajax stadium, the municipality of Amsterdam has decided that Johan Cruyff will give name to a street, square or bridge in the city.
FC Barcelona, the club in which he also played and coached, has decided that the new stadium where the reserve team, the women's team and the youth team will play their matches will be called Johan Cruyff Stadium.
The Catalan club foresees that the first stone of the new facility will be laid next July and will request that one of the streets in the surroundings be named after Johan Cruyff as part of the remodeling of the new Camp Nou.
