Paris Marathon Winners

The couple formed by Kenyan spouses Paul Lonyangata and Purity Rionoripo were the winners in their respective categories, male and female, in the Paris Marathon.

Lonyangata, 24, who had already stood on the podium at the Lisbon Marathon in 2013 and the Shanghai Marathon in 2015, finished with an outstanding time of 2 hours, 6 minutes and 10 seconds.

Following closely behind was fellow Kenyan Stephen Chebogut, with a time of 2 hours, 6 minutes and 56 seconds.

Both fell short of the Paris Marathon record, set in 2014 by Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele in 2 hours, 5 minutes and 2 seconds.

As frequently happens, the Kenyans dominated the race - which was watched by about 200,000 people on the streets - illustrated by the fact that seven out of the top ten finishers in the male category were Kenyan.

Purity Rionoripo, 23, achieved a new women's record in Paris with a time of 2 hours, 20 minutes and 55 seconds.

"It's a great day for me," highlighted the winner, who, like her husband, comes from the same village of Kaptabuk in the West Pokot region.

The couple, who met in 2010 at the junior world championships held in Moncton, Canada, have a three-year-old daughter named Brillian.

A total of 57,000 runners from 146 different nationalities had registered for the race, with 25% of them being women.

The route started on the Champs-Elysées, next to the Arc de Triomphe, and crossed the city from west to east to the Vincennes forest, then retraced its steps along the River Seine and through the Boulogne forest, finally ending on Avenue Foch, not far from the starting point.
